I know if somebody did this to something I'd made, I wouldn't like it, but...

I still do it because I have no money. One of my friends has a good rule of thumb, I think. He says downloading is ok as long as you actually buy it later. Which I usually wind up doing anyway, because the quality of most downloaded stuff sucks.
